Yes, there have been several examples cited, since I posed that question, where the dominant religion of an area has been determined by who won the last war. So the question becomes, what strengths does each side have that could result in them winning this conflict?

Another thing I'm curious about is, what would victory look like in bin Laden's mind? In other words, how would he know when he had won, and how does he imagine this coming about, in practical terms?

One vision of his reportedly is that the present conflict would result in the U.S. breaking into 52 pieces, reminiscent of what happened to the Soviet Union. That seems pretty unlikely to me, which leads me to wonder, how important is that scenario to his game plan? Thoughts, anyone?
