Man, that is probably the best question I've been asked or read on this subject! :)

Another thing I'm curious about is, what would victory look like in bin Laden's mind? In other words, how would he know when he had won, and how does he imagine this coming about, in practical terms?

My guess is he would see victory of sorts if Israel ceased to exist. Lets say he drove the US into its old isolationist mode where the Arabs could then overrun Israel. I would think he would call that a victory.
