What we may consider "gifts" are viewed as "corruptive" influences by fundamentalist Muslims.
Many of them were(are?) considered "corruptive" by fundamentalist Christians and also...
I shouldn't have to remind you of the resistance put forth by the Catholic church during the reformation and "age of enlightenment" several hundred years ago.
Looking at them from a Muslim perspective,
Again, you're being as stereotypical of muslims, as those who believe they are all extremists. There are more "muslim perspectives" other than that advanced by the fundamentalists. Certainly, most muslim women don't concur with the perspective of the male dominated muslims. I personally know quite a few muslim women who refuse to wear veils, and their husbands don't force them to.
Our values, no matter how great we believe them to be, are not shared by the whole world.
If those values don't include respect for the individual and inalienable rights of people to decide for themselves the religious and personal beliefs they chose to follow, then it's inevitable that they will attempt to limit the rights of others, as well.
Thus, I would opine that such repression of human rights, especially with regard to women, poses a threat to every other society... If only because those who impose such a repressive social structure realize that it, and the power they wield over it and the lives they subjugate, realize that it cannot be sustained when competitive and more attractive western freedoms exist.
Before you respond back, think about this a bit and I believe you'll see my point.
