wbmw, re: "It will take at least 3 years for x86-64 to catch on in any reasonable number of applications."

A larger concern than the applications would be the OS to enable 64 bit (and extra registers). While unix flavors seem to be progressing well, I haven't seen anything from MSFT on x86-64. The applications which need 64-bit are probably extremely limited for a desktop system but the availability of the additional registers could provide for significant performance benefits if the software is optimized for them. Would the hardware alone be able to make some/all use of the extra register space even on old software?

Power-hungry apps (not MS office but rather CAD, media editting/creation, games?, etc.) will be optimized for platforms which have sufficient market presence. I look forward to trying my CAD software (AutoCAD LT2000i) on an MP system sometime near the end of this year though the dual benefits are supposedly only in the 30% range and with 2D-CAD the delays at most are only enough for a sip of coffee. I will have to dig up a 30MB file for benchmarking and most files I work with are <5MB.
