Here are those S&P earnings and ratios again:

For 2001E, (now) divide 1040 by 44.7
PE = 23.6

For 1999 (market top), divide 1469 by 52
PE = 28

Compare 1988, divide 277 by 24
PE = 11.5

To put it more simply, over the past 12 years earnings have doubled while stock prices are up by four times.
