I'm no Marx scholar, let me tell you. Still.
Is communism and evil idea?
But then what, in a few words is the idea that's evil?
With my limited understanding it nevertheless strikes me that somethings about this theory of economics and sociology were and remain attractive. I remember Marx best for his questions about the relationship between people and the fruits of their labors -- that it was labor that defined us and that this labor was often stolen, injuring us. How we have tried to solve that problem, more and less successfully, owes no small debt to Marx and the labor movements arising from his complaints and thoughts.
Communism defined as a single, simple, evil idea over-simplifies. I think that we now identify communism with its totalitarian perversions, forgetting that at root, a century ago, was a fairly bright collection of human beings responding to serious problems. The history that resulted as those ideas were taken up is, of course, complex. |
