I have to question the comments in that Washington Post article about even the Iranian conservatives supporting this action. I can see Khatami supporting a reapproachment with the West, because many of the younger folks in Iran wish it and that's his power base.

But the conservatives control the military and security services, and I sure they will be loath to give those institutions up to Khatami without exacting their pound of flesh in the political direction Iran takes.

Iran's more a mystery to me, since I only follow it peripherally... Would be much obliged if someone can amplify on the internal dynamics that are driving the politics in that nation.
