Cambridge closes stroke trial enrollment

June 24, 1997 08:23 AM

CAMBRIDGE, Mass., June 24 (Reuter) - Cambridge NeuroScience Inc said Tuesday it has stopped taking new patients into its phase III trials of its stroke drug called of CERESTAT.

The company said concerns were raised during an interim analysis of data over the benefit to risk ratio of drug treatment.

Enrollment in the phase III trials of the drug in traumatic brain injury is continuing as planned.

Cambridge, along with its partner in the study Boehringer Ingelheim, now plans to collect further information and conduct an expanded benefit to risk analysis on all of the about 600 patients enrolled in order to assess clinical improvement and safety.

The international stroke trial, initiated in July 1996, was designed to examine the efficacy of CERESTAT.

Data collection will continue for three months, and following verification will be analyzed for efficacy and safety.

The independent Data Safety and Monitoring Board for the trial will review the analysis and make a recommendation regarding the continuation of the trial.
