OK, here's my perspective:

(I wrote this before we started bombing today...so is has little meaning to what really matters. God Bless America!)

1. It is rather obvious now that the internet was an overhyped technology. What are the real results? Porno is the main driver. Most everyone who wants the internet has it. The over built mania was a classic case of mismanagement by companies who didn't have a clue about business cycles. Cisco and the rest didn't know it was coming because their management didn't have a historical perspective.

2. People NEED and DESIRE human contact. Things like on-line learning, shopping, etc. have limited growth because once the novelty wears off...and it has...people return to what they know best...getting in the car and getting what they need from people.

3. A lot of niffty technology is anti-human. People will always drift down to the easiest approach to things. This is why Blockbuster is still going strong and things like Gemstar and Pay Per View will only attract a niche community. It's 7:30 at night. I want to watch a movie. I want to get out of the damn house. What do I do? I get in my car and drive to Blockbuster. It's cheap. It's behavoir that is automatic. Meanwhile, my VCR is flasing 12:00.

4. We use wireless phones so easily because it is NOT a major shift from what we already were hot wired for. BUT using handsets to do web work...again only a niche market. WHY? Because:
-Doing web stuff at home is comfortable and CHEAP. Service providers are going to charge per minute rates that will skyrocket the cost of internet use. People are going to pay up for that when they can basically get it for FREE at home?
-Wait all you want for voice activation. It is another thing that is not hot wired into our bodies. Too many weird quirps. Background noise. Saying the wrong thing. So we are now restricted to using the provided keypad. People are hot wired to type, not play dancing elf fingers on a tiny keypad. Wear are my glasses? Oh, I left them in the car.

It will probably take a generation to get full use of this 3G thing...because only kids raised on it will use it as it is dreamed to be as adults. Are soccer moms going to be using their 3G handset to...to do what? Order pizza for the game afterwards? They'll make the call instead. A lot of folks here are frothing at the mouth to get their hands on the new handset things...but a room full of techies ain't going to make a stock triple...only earnings will.

And those earnings are only a dream right now.
Just like those dreams for the internet were.
Just like those dreams for fiber optics were.
Not to say those wireless dreams won't happen, but one must remember the that line in the song by the Who...

"...and hope we don't get fooled again."
