Hi Tim,

I know that GigE has been put forward as an alternative to fiber channel. I think the cost of 40g optical networks will be prohibitive for a while though. You need to install the new type of leaf fiber to get full advantage and then there are the deploy and service issues. I was told by someone that works in the area that the manufacturing issues are difficult and that even test the components are difficult because of the speeds involved and due to the fact that the amounts of power one is dealing with are small.

Among the storage companies, who has gigE research programs? I think EMC has a program.
