It sounds to me like you might not understand just how sinful sin is. Paul tells us we are creatures of wrath, our hearts are evil, and that no one is righteous, no not one.(Romans)

Some believe that we have an island of righteousness in us, enough to enable us to seek after God. Paul, in Romans 9, tells us that no one seeks after God[before they are made alive first].

So I would disagree with you that there is something lovable in us. "God so loved" refers to the amazing love and grace of HIM, and his wonderful and merciful disposition toward his rotten, rebellious, and wrathful creatures, not that there was anything in us which was lovable.

Liberalism and modernity tells us that man is essentially good. Paul says just the opposite. I'll take Paul's(God's breathed words) word as Gospel.
