Syria wants Israel targeted in anti-terror move

By Reuters

DAMASCUS - Syria blamed Israel on Monday for the escalation of world terrorism and said the success of any anti-terror campaign depended on forcing Israel to abide by international law.

The official daily newspaper Tishreen said the September 11 suicide attacks against the United States and similar previous attacks on other countries were a result of what it called Israeli terrorist actions against Arabs. "We are not mistaken when we say that the escalation of world terror, and the terrorist actions against the United States...is a result of the Israeli rulers' practices and their flagrant violation of the basic human principles and values," Tishreen said. "The success of any campaign against terrorism depends totally on deterring Israeli rulers and forcing them to abide by international law and U.N. resolutions and to stop the Israeli brutal actions against the Palestinian people," Tishreen added.

""The world community, no doubt, holds a partial responsibility towards the flourishing of terrorism because they failed to confront the dangerous Israeli practices and because they did not punish the Israeli leaders for their crimes against humanity," the Syrian newspaper said. ""The result of any silence against Israel's crimes will have no result but to shed a dim light against the credibility and seriousness of any action aimed at uprooting terrorism from our contemporary world," it added.

Israel should also be forced to "withdraw totally from the occupied Arab lands and enable the Palestinian people enjoy their rights, including their right for self-determination and the establishment of an independent state," the paper said.
