Sun could not have asked for anything more for its guaranteed success! Microsoft is providing J/Direct. In my humble opinion, Microsoft just shot itself in the head if it still wanted to dominate the industry.
Microsoft's marketing and top management do not seem to get it! With Java it will be the cooperation not the confrontation that will make someone like Microsoft a lot of money. There is absolutely no way, and I usually dont want to be definite about something but in this case I make an exception, there is absolutely no way J/Direct will win Microsoft anything. In fact it may have a drastic negative effect and offset a lot of goods and progress Microsoft has done for the past 2 years. I was just talking with a brilliant software architect at Microsoft and he said it very nicely (and I hope I dont get into any trouble by putting it here): By introducing J/Direct, Microsoft just lost the war for its continued domination as the software vendor of the industry. I could not have said it better. It is funny how in practically every case, it is the marketing of the company that brings down that company (even if it is for a short period of time), and not the R&D or sales! This has happened to many database and software tools companies and it will continue to happen. And for the first time since its inception, Microsoft will also get a taste of how this would feel!

Addi Jamshidi
