Video phone: This type of video phone technology has been available for over a decade. Inmarsat sell multiples of 64 kbps channels and basically video is compressed to the H.320 standard (for ISDN). In a live set-up quality dips 9depending on number of channels of course), however with full compression, time delayed upload using one channel (to keep costs down) can be decompressed at an earth station to provide near TV picture quality. The two different techniques have been used for the Round the World Yacht Race (live) and also video diaries from the Antarctic (for French TV some 10 years back). Sorry, I used to work for a video codec manufacturer that supplied kits for these types of operations. M
