Right on, Michael
We have moved light-years beyond merely tolerating "others" (note: code word that we all assume means people who have come here from other cultures). Now, we are expected to adapt to their cultures. Language, for example. It's much too much to expect people who speak Spanish to bother to learn English, even if we grant them citizenship in what was supposed to be an English-speaking nation.. It's less anal of us if we just learn to speak their language, because, what the heck, their language is as good as ours, isn't it? Around here, in Boston, police officers have been criticized for firing upon citizens who don't understand commands in English. While a suspect holds a gun on them, they are supposed to call for an interpreter (this being an intermediate step to them learning Spanish themselves). And I'm not picking on Latinos (is that acceptable or offensive? I can't keep track). Anyway, the same principle will soon be employed to all the world's languages.
Oh, well whatever. |
