1.The capacity for or the practice of recognizing and respecting the beliefs or practices of others.
2. a. Leeway for variation from a standard.

Your definitions one and two have a lot in common. Number 2 is about physical deviation from a standard in manufacturing. Number 1, if you think about it, is really the same thing in the interpersonal realm. It's about how much space we give people who don't conform to our standards or society's standards.

If you think about the actual process of respecting the beliefs of others, how do you do that? Well, you could say that their beliefs are just as good as anyone else's. If you did, you wouldn't be tolerant, you'd be a relativist.

If you thought your beliefs or the standard beliefs were better but you tolerated the beliefs of others anyway, you'd be allowing them some latitude, giving them permission to be different, backing off your standards so that their beliefs were within range, or restraining your natural urge to punish them for their low standards. That's tolerance.

Your definition and mine aren't different, I don't think.
