US wants to use five Indian ports

Sudhi Ranjan Sen

(New Delhi, October 8)

The US is understood to have requested India to make five ports, including three Indian Naval bases, available for its Navy. These ports are Vishakapatnam Cochin, Goa, Mumbai and Balsar.

Though there was no comment from the Indian side, a US Embassy spokeperson confirmed to HT that the US had indeed sought information about facilities at these bases.

He added that the request was in "preparation for routine ship visits and was part of the developing military relationship with India." Efforts to contact the Defence Secretary failed.

Sources said that talks were recently held between US and Indian officials. The facilities available in these ports were discussed. US officials were briefed about maintenance work and docking facilities at these ports. The US is believed to have asked India not to keep these ports engaged.

According to reports, the US is has deployed seven Frigates, six destroyers and two aircraft carriers and at least two nuclear powered submarines in the Arabian Sea, Indian Ocean and Gulf to provide logistical support.

Vishakhapatnam, Cochin and Mumbai are "large" ports where aircraft carriers can be docked and repaired. They are also the hub of Indian Naval activity.

Sources said that necessary groundwork had been completed but the US would have to send a formal request to the Indian Government, seeking permission to use these five ports.

Defence experts feel that the request could be due to two reasons: India might have better facilities than Pakistan and using Pakistani ports could put Musharraf under more pressure within his country.
