The socialist idea is that if we are indeed entitled to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness (which, as a recall, was a jeffersonian softening of Locke's ...pursuit of property) there are certain fundamentals that are needed in order to stay alive, be free and find an apartment -- and that we, as a community, ought to be able to provide these, within certain more or less ill-defined limits, for each other.

Socialism is not, by definition a belief in total, communal property.
