There's nothing wrong with defensible generalizations. Specifics are equally dangerous. For example, Hitler's theory of Dolchstoss is very specific, but happens to be very wrong. The theory of gravity is very general, yet serves as a pretty good explanation of reality. Similarly, the notion that freedom and democracy should be universal is an extreme generalization. Irrationality and closed minds are and have always been the true threats to human progess and the ascendance of civilization.
