I haven't been turn on yet. I was implanted a week ago. I will have my initial stimulation in three weeks. It's takes awhile before you brain adapts. At first everyone sounds like Darth Vader or Donald Duck which happens because of the depth of insertion of the array into your cochlea which causes a mismatch of sounds to nerves. Since low tones are longer wave forms, more of the cochlear is used to pick those up, since array is not inserted all the way into the cochlea a mismatch is caused. Not only do they have to map the array to your cochlea, your brain has to adapt to a new way of hearing. There will be many visits to the audi for program changes (new mappings) for the first 7 weeks, then monthly, then normally once or twice yearly. But the system I have has another level of frequency range and sound delivery that is currently under FDA trail. So, I might be seeing my audi a lot more then normal. I have actual active components inside my head, which is totally new, that will store the program, so only the sound has to be transmitted once the program is downloaded. By the way. The company that manufacture my cochlear implant, Advanced Bionics, sent me, via email, Rush's transcript about his hearing loss and his mention of cochlear implants.
