nterwave Communications is expected to announce today that it has signed a five-year contract to supply wireless network equipment to the Telstra Corporation (news/quote), Australia's largest mobile communications company, people close to the company said yesterday.

The contract is worth as much as $50 million for Interwave, a company based in Menlo Park, Calif., that specializes in equipment for mobile communications in rural or underdeveloped regions. The equipment Interwave is selling to Telstra is for the carrier's business customers in Australia and Asia.

The contract will help Interwave diversify its customer base with the addition of an important client in a rich, industrialized country. Interwave already has contracts to supply wireless equipment to companies in countries like Paraguay, Somalia and Kenya.

Under the agreement, Interwave will provide Telstra with equipment that operates on the GSM (Global System for Mobile Communications) wireless standard.

Interwave's technology allows wireless carriers to offer customers a service that permits employees to remain accessible with a single phone number as they move between different work sites.
