Addi, I do not see how Microsoft "shot itself in the foot" by giving developers a way to make Windows API calls.

They are giving developers more, not less. One more weapon in their arsenal. No matter what your take on portability, the ABILITY to call underlying OS functions is ALWAYS a plus. It means you can tailor to a particular environment, and get around shortcomings in the Java libraries.

It is up to the individual developer to decide to use this capability or not. For developers, this is a BIG win, not a negative. I don't want to be protected from myself.
