As another citizen of NYC I'll respond:

It's not that simple. The first week after the WTC, I had to show I.D. to get onto the block where the library is, because police were stationed there because it's a precinct. I was more than happy to do it, but it's a reminder of the trauma/fear.

And though security is stepped up--which in one way is reassuring--it is again, a reminder. I am sure most people in NYC have post-traumatic stress syndrome to some extent. Very few are going out and about without thinking of it. I took a friend to the doc's the other day and every person in the office was talking about it--bioterrorism, bombs, etc. I wanted to throw away a piece of paper and the receptionist said, "As long as it isn't ticking." Etc.

And even though security is stepped up one does not really feel secure. And probably shouldn't.
