This is very interesting. What I particularly find interesting is that contrary to popular belief, long term semiconductor revenue is considerably less than the 15% annual rate and closer to 12%. The other interesting point is that for the 4 years since 1996, the sales basically went nowhere. This stagnation did not exist for finished high tech goods.

If anyone has "back-tracked" data for XLK, it will be interesting to see if XLK outperformed SOX during that interval. There may be parallels to the present.

OT -- Nothing would please Osama more than seeing an effort to colonize Afghanistan, Iraq, etc. as described in the WSJ article. Colonism ended not because of the end of piracy, but because the foreign powers were getting their asses kicked and could not hold on to their colonies. But at least in those days only the colonizing troops were under attack. Today, their own home land could be paying the price.
