InfoSpace Awarded New Patent for Location-Based Services Patent Protects Key Component of InfoSpace's Wireless Location-Based Services BELLEVUE, Wash., Oct 9, 2001 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- InfoSpace, Inc. (Nasdaq: INSP chart, msgs), a leading provider of the platform and applications that enable partners to deliver consumer and commerce services across the Internet to any device over current and next-generation networks, today announced the company has been awarded a new patent protecting key components of the technology behind the location-based services component of InfoSpace's wireless platform by the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO).
U.S. Patent Number 6,295,528 (method and apparatus for converting a geographic location to a direct marketing area for a query) protects InfoSpace technology for performing database queries with geographic inputs that are converted to a direct marketing area. Direct marketing areas define geographic locations as discrete areas of interest that may be more useful than city limits or latitude/longitude for purposes of services delivery and marketing based on a users physical location.
InfoSpace's wireless platform enables carriers to quickly deploy location-based services and applications to subscribers under their own brand name. Location-based services automatically determine a user's whereabouts and tailor the services and applications delivered to the user according to their current location. InfoSpace's platform can work with a range of location determination technologies including handset and network-based systems as well as systems that use a combination of the two.
"Our portfolio of leading edge technologies sets InfoSpace apart as an innovator of new solutions and ideas that enable our network of partners to deploy cutting edge services to their customers over almost any device," said Naveen Jain, chairman and chief executive officer of InfoSpace. "We are committed to continue developing and protecting these innovative technologies in order to maintain our position in the market."
InfoSpace currently has over 50 patents pending and, with an engineering force of skilled and dedicated professionals, InfoSpace is committed to maintaining, expanding and maximizing the value of its growing portfolio of intellectual property. Since being founded in 1996, InfoSpace has been a leader in providing the underlying infrastructure technologies and applications that advance and enable its partners to fully capitalize on the latest developments in Internet-based wireless, wireline, broadband and merchant services.
