This rumor surfaced last Thursday:

SOURCES TOLD the INQUIRER that Hewlett Packard (HP), which at the beginning of last week announced plans that it would acquire Compaq, is taking radical steps to slim down its semiconductor arms.
In the last week of August, it shut down its server chipset outfit in Silicon Valley. Employees were told that Intel would give them jobs but they had to make the decision by the 31st of August.

It's not known how many decided to take up the offer but it appears the majority did so.

But it appears that even more radical plans are afoot for its PA-RISC microprocessor design unit, based in Colorado.

The engineer rumour mill is currently buzzing with word that when the last PA-RISC processor is complete, HP will sell the unit to Intel.
