MacArthur, Eisenhower, and the rest of the military establishment knew and stated at the time that Japan was thoroughly crushed and on the verge of surrender.

I think they knew Japan would never surrender without an American invasion of Honshu and Kyushu and what a horrible, bloody affair that would be.

(Aside: Everyone agrees this is one of those endless debates that will continue down through history and so...what are we trying to get at here?)
