Three points about the atom bombs:

1. Mass bombing of cities: London, Coventry, Berlin, Dresdin, Tokyo, etc, had already been practiced for years in WWII, with immense casualties. The fire bombing of Tokyo produced casualties higher that Hiroshima and Nagasaki combined. So at the time, the moral questions didn't even occur to people because everyone had been in a total war for years already.

2. What was new and different about the atom bomb was not the effect, but how much bang you got for the buck. To get a firestorm using conventional weapons, you need hundreds of planes every night for a week with the weather conditions just right. With an atom bomb, one plane for one night will do it.

3. The effects of fallout and radiation took the army by surprise. This was something that had never been done before.
