The evil empire USSR was beaten back and eventually destroyed for us largely due to the efforts of the Afgans. Following that, they were in a horribly weakened condition and went through several civil war episodes which ultimately decimated the country. The Taleban came to Afghanistan from external intervention and ultimately set up this set of conditions.

Had we invoked something like the Marshal plan to help Afghanistan rebuild and to create a strong economy after their/our war with the USSR things would be much different.

Ok well, there are other ways to look at it but this one is just as legitimate as most.
