My swing trading hasn't been going too well (is there such a thing?) lately but it has provoked me to reconsider the utility of using spreads (particularly vertical debit spreads). I had previously been somewhat skeptical about the utility of such spreads for swing trading because of the relatively poor responsiveness of such spreads to changes in the underlying and because of the limited profit potential. In a very high volatility situation (such as when trading reopened after the 9/11 attacks), however, the protection offered by such spreads seems more appealing (both against adverse moves in the underlying and against a collapse in volatility). I still think that vertical debit spreads are generally unappealing for swing trading but recent events have made me more willing to consider them.
