"Altalena" is a reference to the time when the Zionists had to bring their extremists to heel. In June 1948 the Altalena, a ship carrying arms and volunteers for the Irgun arrived in Israel. David Ben Gurion ordered that it be turned over to the Zahal (regular army); Menachim Begin refused; then Ben Gurion ordered the Altalena sunk, and it was. A young officer named Yitzhak Rabin saw to the sinking.

Arafat's Altalena moment is Israeli shorthand for the moment when he must control Hamas or be destroyed by Hamas.
