Sounds like you had fun. There's nothing like it, I know, which I guess is why I keep doing it despite the frustrations.

You're right, we make a decent living and our clients tend to be significantly affluent. They have to be. Just the propellor for one of these things will cost you four grand. But I have to tell you that I get more than a little perturbed when, having and needing thirty years of experience to do what I do, I get whined at about my bill from some lawyer or what have you making six times (or much more) my hourly rate. Meanwhile I'm on my back, in the mud under his or her boat. I have always been a little puzzled about the apparent lack of a relationship between the skills needed for some job and the market value of those skills.

Still, make no mistake, some even most clients are gems and we appreciate each other thoroughly.

But that's the scary bit. We make our living off of people's disposable income for the most part. Still, what has saved our butts is that boatbuilding skills makes house fixing skills almost trivial in most cases. We have always found something to do even in the worst of times to keep the dogs fed. We prefer screwed up old boats but we're not prima donnas. I've done my fair share of insulating crawl spaces and hope that I never have to do it again.
