[Point Counter-point]

<<<<< if the ALA chip turns out to be no good --- which everyone I've talked to including NEC/Australia says is the case>>

<<That's a strong statement. In what specific ways are the Mietec chips "no good"? And what are they being compared to?>>

I am referring to Alcatel's own chip which I understand has power problems, among others. I heard this first-hand from Head of Operations/NEC/Australia. This confirmed what JS had said at the annual meeting when he said Alcatel needed Amati's engineers to help with their chip. He was not any more specific than that. As for Mietec, is their chip in use now? If so, what is the response?

<<<Based on their ability to function in the GTE trials now underway, how would the alliance with ALA threaten CSCO's prospects when GTE decides to deploy? And isn't CSCO equipment also at work in the WSTL portoins of GTE's trials? Looks like CSCO wins either way. Are you saying CSCO has a vested interest in seeing AMTX beat WSTL for the GTE deployment contract?>>>

When I refer to Cisco's prospects re: GTE, I only mean in regards to ADSL. What they do with other segments of the backbone is irrelevent to this discussion. Amati can choose its own datacommunications partner. It's been estimated that GTE will deploy 2 million DMT units between 1998 and 2002 and everyone with whom I've talked says Amati is the top contender. To my knowledge that hasn't changed. If Cisco screws them as you suggest they are, Amati could choose another partner. Do they want Westell instead of Amati? Perhaps. But I think Chambers is smarter than that.

Will GTE decide to go with an Alcatel solution? Considering GTE can't select a product that hasn't gone through every stage of testing, I think this is highly unlikely. Do you understand how long it takes to get a product accepted? Alcatel's products have not been in one GTE trial so I estimate that would put them about a year away from full endorsement.

Your comments are terribly misinformed.

Regards,

Pat
