Arafat seeks Israel's help to curb riots
AFP
(Jerusalem, October 9)

The Palestinian Authority asked Israel Tuesday to supply it with anti-riot equipment after the bloody street clashes between Palestinian police and Islamists the previous day, the Israeli defense ministry said.
"There has been such a request from the Palestinian Authority, and we are now studying it," ministry spokesman Yarden Vatikai told AFP without going into detail

Vatikai was responding to an Israeli public television report, which said the Palestinians had asked for tear-gas grenades.

However, a senior Palestinian official, on condition of anonymity, denied the Palestinians had requested assistance from Israel.

"This is a big lie. It is completely untrue. This rumour does not deserve to be answered. It aims to create problems among the Palestinian people," he said .

Two Palestinians were shot dead Monday and at least 200 injured, including 100 police, as student protests against the US-led strikes on Afghanistan degenerated into gunbattles with Palestinian police.
