Notes from Motorola 3Q '01 CC....

General impression....CDMA provided much of the strength for both their handset and infrastructure divisions (both were profitable).

Units
QoQ YoY
CDMA 15% 33%
iDEN -13% 12%
GSM -13% -9%
TDMA 18% -18%

- They shipped 1.5m GPRS handsets during the quarter (vs 84,000 during the second quarter). They expect total GPRS handset shipments of 5m for the year.

- Total units were flat YoY and down 5% sequentially. They shipped 15.8m units for 17%-18% of the handset market. ASP's were up 14% sequentially.

- They estimate a total handset market of 380-400m for the year. The sell-through rate is 30-40m units higher (due to bloated inventory at the end of '00. The estimate for next year is 420m-460m. Inventory for the handset industry is now normal.

- They have shipped initial CDMA infrastructure to China. The launch will begin in the 4th Q.

- They expect the 1xrtt handset market (outside of Korea) to pick up during the second quarter of '02.

- CDMA sales represent 45-50% of total infrastructure shipments. China sales were significant.

Was Qualcomm sandbagging with respect to CDMA chipset sales to China? I had thought that they didnt include any impact from China in this quarters results...but it is hard to believe that some chipsets wouldnt need to be shipped by the end of the 3Q for a 4Q launch.
