I personally don't think there's alot wrong with being selfish but the selfishness should be based on a longer term view. Short term gains are not sustainable if one does not consider the long term view. When you build a house you do things in certain order so that in the end the house will have no problems. If you look at building the house only as if one part of the construction does not have anything to do with the other your house will have alot of defects.

All countries are selfish, all individuals are selfish but the better you are at doing something the more is expected from you. The world holds the U.S. to such a high standard because they are the best. It may seem like all we do is criticize the U.S. these days but it is not because the world doesn't respect the U.S. but because the world is in a panic. The strongest country in the world has been hit and it has freaked everybody out.

The role of the U.S. in the world has been that of a cop ... someone who tries to prevent injustice. When the bad guys shoot the cop it's logical that everybody panics.
