No; the threat to many Arab governments from Islamicist organizations -- Al Quaeda, Islamic Jihad (which just merged with Al Quaeda), Muslim Brotherhood, Hamas, Hezbollah -- is too serious and widespread for this pooh-poohing to be anything but blindness or wilful misdirection. And I don't think Edward Said is blind. Well, it's always nice to correspond with someone who knows the truth. And there is no grinnie after that. I gather your form of argument is to accuse folk who disagree with you of concealing the truth. Wonderful. I thought the preferred form of such argument is to accuse them of being ignorant. My guess is that Said has an argument with your point but I also guess that you will never hear it. Since you've already made up your mind that he is untrustworthy. John
