Haim, true enough... but the current conflict has delivered the necessary pretext to establish a military presence in the region, thereby securing the area for the West, always provided things go according to plan.

i agree with you that sentiment in the Arab world is misunderstood in the West, and that the determination of the radicals is underestimated (well perhaps not anymore). my hope is that pursuant to the military engagement in Afghanistan (which should damage Al Qaeda regardless of whether Bin Laden can be caught) there will be a renewed effort to resolve the Israeli/Palestinian conflict as well as an attempt to rethink strategy towards Iraq. in short, the West should be seen by the Muslim world to be addressing the major grievances cited by the radicals as being the root cause of their existence.
that way we would take all legitimacy away from them - as things stand now, OBL and his henchmen are definitely winning the propaganda war in the Muslim countries, attaining the status of folk heroes of sorts. as long as that's the case they will always be able to find men willing to join their cause. OBL calls us hypocrites - we must show the Muslim world that HE is the hypocrite.
not an easy task admittedly.
