I believe Rick is right about the latency. I think it's a factor of how far the signal needs to be broadcast - up to the satellite in space and back down.

I have DirectTV, and I know if I have one TV using satellite and another using a regular broadcast antenna watching the same program, the show on the satellite is about 3 seconds behind.

I use ISDN for that very reason. NO cable or DSL available here in the rural California mountains.
