I assume whoever is teaching this child has had classes dealing with the handling
of children with special needs?

In our school district? Nope. I don't think ANY of the classroom teachers have given any classes, or sent to workshops paid by the district, or given any other training in handling special needs children. We do have special ed staff, but they give at maximum a half hour a day four days a week. And the one working with this student is more of an enabler than anything else. Nobody thinks it's a good situation, but there is no money to fix it.

California seems to be doing better by its special needs kids. Don't know where they get the money from, though.

BTW, I think you know my daughters are in a school of ed in Oregon. They require applicants to the school to pass the CBEST and MSAT before they will admit them to the school of ed. My question is, if they can pass those before they enter your school, why do they need your school? Their only answer is that they don't want to admit students who will graduate and then fail the tests, since it's a waste of the school's resources and the student's time. But I take that as an admission that they don't expect to teach anything in the school of ed which is relevant to passing the CBEST or MSAT. So why do they think those tests are relevant? So far no answer to that.

But both daughters passed both tests on the first try, which I guess is exceptional. But then, they're my kids, so of course they're exceptional <modest g>

What's the RICA? Haven't heard of that one.
