Lots of people have mentioned having nightmares and
interrupted sleep patterns since Sept 11. (I sure have had them)I recognized several of the themes when I came across an article on sleep disturbances after trauma:

Common nightmare themes:
-Cars or planes going out of control or crashing
-Being chased or kidnapped (animals chasing are more common in children)
-Rejection, abandonment, betrayal, or humiliation
-Natural disasters: earthquakes, tidal waves, tornadoes, floods
-Technological disasters such as explosions, fire, nuclear war and chemical contamination, plane crashes.
-Violent attack and/or injury to self or others.
-Ghosts returning from the dead in a frightening form
-Falling
-Being paralyzed or unable to respond to an urgent or life-threatening challenge
-Illnesses such as cancer, AIDS, paralysis
-Mortal threats from attackers, terrorists, thieves, animals or creatures
-Failing an exam or forgetting your lines or forgetting to take one course in high school or college
-Being seen naked or partially naked in public
-Losing your teeth (often teeth are experienced as crumbling and falling out)

WHole article, including some interesting facts about the derivation of the word:
