Microsoft and InfoSpace Team To Extend MSN Instant Messenger Capabilities To Wireless Devices

InfoSpace first to extend MSN Instant Messenger beyond the PC to cellular phones, pagers, personal digital assistants and fax machines

REDMOND, WA. — Dec. 20, 1999 — InfoSpace (NASDAQ:INSP), a leading provider of infrastructure services for consumers, merchants and wireless devices, today announced it has integrated MSN's Instant Messenger with InfoSpace's Instant Messaging Service. The service, available through InfoSpace's personal desktop portal, will give InfoSpace and MSN Instant Messenger users the ability to send and receive instant messages anytime, anywhere and on any device. In addition, millions of MSN Instant Messenger users will now have access to InfoSpace's comprehensive services.

For example, a sales representative who needs to be in constant communication with his clients may be out of the office and still be able to send and receive instant messages on his wireless devices, including his cell phone, pager, personal digital assistant (PDA) or fax machine. The salesperson may receive an instant message from a vendor for an urgent change in a recent order. He can then send that change request in to the main office and reply to his vendor all within a single instant message and without the need to know where those people are or what device they may be accessing.

"We have the only instant messenger technology that is peer-to-peer and device independent. By teaming with Microsoft, we've extended our services to all MSN Instant Messenger users, allowing them to utilize Internet services from a wide variety of devices," said Naveen Jain, chairman and CEO, InfoSpace. "This is yet another example of how we are executing our vision of delivering the most comprehensive information and services on the Internet - anytime, anywhere and on any device."

About InfoSpace's Instant Messaging Service

InfoSpace's Instant Messaging Service provides full featured instant messaging functionality that hosts a user's messaging profile and group lists on the server. With the user's information residing on the server, incoming messages can be routed to one-way, two-way and browser-enabled mobile devices, even when the user's computer is turned off. From the browser-enabled mobile devices, users can also access group lists, see who is online and available for messaging and send and receive messages.

The technology provides secure, permission-based instant text messaging, instant file transfer and URL sharing and is compliant with existing instant messaging protocols and provides interoperability with any open-access messaging service. This fully integrated, real-time communications technology in conjunction with InfoSpace's other services such as the Desktop Portal and My Info deliver a powerful, integrated suite of communications tools.
