Intel faces Pentium 4 shortage

478 pins in screamingly short supply
By Mike Magee, 11/10/2001 08:46:52 BST

CHIPZILLA HAS BUMPED into a big hurdle that is threatening to kybosh its plans for world microprocessor domination with the Pentium 4.
Sources both in the US and in Europe told the INQUIRER yesterday that there are very severe product limitations on its 478-pin Pentium 4s and even the 423-pin stock is in short supply.

478 pin Pentium 4s and 423 pin Pentium 4s both support the .18 micron process but the former is a scaleable design aimed at the up-and-coming speeds of 2.2GHz.

Northwood, the .13 micron "shrink" of the Pentium 4, depends on supplies of processors from recently converted Intel factories, and will also use the 478 pin socket initially.

One US Intel PC customer told the INQUIRER: "It doesn't look like these issues will get any better in the short term . So their Q4 results could be rocky - something they will probably and unfortunately blame on the events on the 11th September
