Professor Dotcomm,

I am a UK resident and also a firearm owner. Fortunately I left all my firearms in the USA so they were not confiscated after the Dunblane tragedy.

Of course I am "pro firearms". However, I am interested if our country is safer now that that most firearms are banned. Also, when the pistol ban came in, practically every shooting club in the country went out of business. Without shooting ranges, you don't even get to own a rifle either.

So...end result. Nearly all legal citizens of this country do not own a firearm of any description. That includes me btw (apart from what I own in the USA).

I am interested what the statistics are. Last time I checked gun crime and gun deaths had gone up. Not only that but the gun toting criminal knows the advantage he/she has over the legal citizen for sure. You can laugh, but wait until you find a criminal breaking into your property while you are inside it. I called the police at the time of course. I also reminded them that I didn't need firearms to protect myself because they were there to protect me. The response I got was it wasn't the police who took the guns away, it was the government. No, Tony Blair was not at the top of my favorite list at the time. -g-

Another point. There have been a significant number of deaths where police (who have loads of guns) have shot and killed citizens because they thought they were carrying a firearm but afterwards proved innocent. I mean guns are illegal now (I am sure that thought had an effect)

So, I am keeping an open mind... but unsure the statistics prove your point. I don't mind talking to others that have an open mind, but my experience is that less then 1% of the population do. It's all fixed agenda when it comes to talking about firearm ownership.
