Jacob. Hi. I understand that the surprise was when he was told that he must more than meet the maintenence of margin requirement by a factor of 3X the amount of the expected amount. For example, if he hit 28% when he needed 30% equity, then the evidentally added equity of 3 x 2% or 34% equity and this was due to having an account concentrated in 1 stock.

The question is whether this is an Exchange requirement or some SSB requirement. He was apparantly advised that it was an Exchange requirement--ie voice of god and all that.

I was a little shocked my the whole incident as I never considered it safe to go below 70 to 75% equity -- especially in this market.
