<<They've said they'd sign when they're ready to sell. Why tie up money before then?>>

Two reasons: To put aside CAP-camp FUD about DMT being a fragmented standard and non-interoperable, and out of gratitude to AMTX for all the help they've provided ALA over the years.

/*
<<Second, If AMTX helped ALA then its safe to assume that ALA's chips are OK now since AMTX has the best ADSL engineers in the world.>>

We're talking about two different chips. The first generation ALA chip has nothing to do with Amati and it's the only one out.

OK, I was talking about the next-generation chips. Chalk it up to the difficulties of being succinct on a BBS. In saying this:

<<if the ALA chip turns out to be no good --- which everyone I've talked to including NEC/Australia says is the case --- [CSCO] say[s], "Sorry, nice try, we'll go with Amati's. . .">>

You're tarring the future chips with the criticisms you've heard of the current model. The same criticism, I'll add, that's been made of the LSI-based Overtures: too much power.

That's where I got confused and we ended up in this tangle.

<<Cisco could certainly join an alliance with Alcatel based on their belief a viable chip would be ready when the needed it.>>

Exactly. Obviating the need for them to look elsewhere (MOT, TI).
