I had a screening procedure done today at the hospital. They asked me the usual questions about drug allergies, smoking, family history of disease, etc. The next to the last question was whether I had any "spiritual or cultural needs that were relevant to the procedure."

There was some wait time so I pondered the question and decided that I liked it. It's respectful to ask plus it saves them the problem of some issue coming up later at an awkward time. It also puts the onus on the patients to decide how far they really expects the hospital to go to accommodate them and how much they can adjust to the hospital.

I'm still a bit groggy, but I'm thinking now that that's a good way to go about life. When you meet your new kids and their parents each school year, maybe you already ask the question or maybe you wait for the parents to bring it up if they expect issues. Maybe we all ought to get in the habit of asking in some form or another when we invite people we don't know well to a dinner party, or meet new people on the job or in the neighborhood.

There was one problem with the question, though, they timing. They didn't ask me until they had me in a hospital gown plugged into assorted monitors in a room full of others in the same state. It was a bit late for me to tell them that they had to do the procedure with me still wearing my burqa and with no men in the neighborhood. Still, I liked the idea.
