America is one country that still has control over its destiny.
It is amazing to see how problems somehow gather a critical mass, then a serious attempt is made to solve them. Energy dependence may rise to that level now. But it is not just Alternate energy technology but also the whole lifestyle.
See seven sins of sprawl.
The seven sins of sprawl
1. Spread-out: low-density, thinly spread development; unmercifully car dependent

2. Segregated: single, separate land uses that increase travel distances and isolate people

3. Skipped over: discontinuous leap-frog development that gobbles up land and raises the costs of extending infrastructure

4. Shapeless: amoeba-like in form, "there's no there there"

5. Scattershot: unplanned, piecemeal growth that creates traffic jams and costly public works to patch up the mess

6. Strip commercialism: ribbons of petrol stations, shopping plazas, auto rows, big-box retailers and fast-food outlets, forming an uninspiring landscape

7. Subsidized: unborne social, infrastructure and environmental costs that run into trillions of dollars worldwide each year
