DRAM maker ProMOS (5387 TT) cut its 2001 capex to maintain a higher cash position. ProMOS and its parent company Mosel (2342 TT) suffer from concerns over their default risk; therefore, ProMOS decided to delay its 12" fab project and keep more cash in hand. Winbond (2344 TT) continues to show the best financial structure among in terms of financial health of all Taiwan DRAM makers. The following are the debt ratio for DRAM firms at the end of 1H01: Winbond 23%, Mosel 44%, Nanya 58%, ProMOS 41%, and Powerchip 36%. Winbond also owns 100mn shares of TSMC (2330 TT) worth more than NT$5bn, which are also very liquid. We believe Winbond will be very attractive to investors during this rebound in high tech shares
