United States may take military action against Syria

By Natan Gutman, Ha'aretz Correspondent

Deputy Secretary of State Richard Lee Armitage said Thursday night that the United States may also take military action against Syria, if it does not comply with U.S. demands to act against terror organizations in its territory.

Armitage, when asked by journalists in Washington what would happen to countries such as Syria if they did not act against terror, said the results would be whatever the coalition found to be appropriate - isolation, financial investigations and even possible military action. Armitage said that in the second stage of the campaign, the U.S. would take action against additional organizations and countries using terror against the U.S. and its allies.

Armitage said that as yet Syria has not proved it is fighting terror and that he did not regard Syria as part of the coalition. He said Syria has from time to time expressed its wish to participate in the coalition, but that it had not supported its intentions with any action. Armitage added that now was a good opportunity to "open Syria's" eyes regarding the need to fight terror.

Syria is on the State Department's list of states supporting terror, as it supports the Hezbollah organization which acts against Israel from Lebanon, and the Kurdish underground organization PKK.

David Harris, head of the American Jewish Committee, a prominent dovish Jewish organization, met Thursday with Bush administration officials and said after the meetings that a certain comparison between the Al Qaida organization and Hamas and Hezbollah had been made. He added the that U.S. would act against those assisting terror.
